A great mountain in early spring, green forest climbing its slopes, a tiger at the tree line.
Mu-in sets the mountain, 戊, on the Tiger, 寅, spring wood. Wood controls earth, so the forest presses on the mountain, and yet the stage here is Birth, a fresh start. The picture is a mountain coming alive: a tiger's mountain.
People with this day pillar are often described as bold, dignified and ambitious, with a strong presence. You sit on the Challenger, which the tradition reads as courage, pressure and leadership. You may do best with a real challenge in front of you and grow restless without one.
With others you tend to be protective, frank and generous. You may be the one who steps up in a crisis. The growth point is gentleness: tigers are admired, and friends also want to come close.

What sits inside Mu-in
The branch 寅 In holds hidden stems (지장간 jijanggan). Seen from the day master 戊, each one takes a ten god role. The last one listed is the main stem, so this pillar is said to sit on the Challenger. What controls your element, same polarity: pressure, courage and the test that makes you stronger.
| Hidden stem | Ten god for 戊 |
|---|---|
| 戊 Mu, yang earth (7 days) | Peer 비견 |
| 丙 Byeong, yang fire (7 days) | Outsider mind 편인 |
| 甲 Gap, yang wood (16 days) | Challenger 편관 |
In the twelve stage life cycle (십이운성 sibi unseong), 戊 in 寅 stands at Birth (장생 長生): the stem is newly born in this branch, read as fresh energy, curiosity and support at the start of something.
A question to sit with
Which challenge are you taking on because you want to, and which out of habit?
